Quick Remodeling Tip - Checking out General Contractors
Regardless of how you come upon one or more General Contractors you are thinking about going with, be sure to do some due diligence on them before signing any documentation from them.
Customer Reviews
What are the renovation contractor's past clients saying about them on Yelp, Google+, and perhaps Angie's List?
If you are considering a remodeling contractor that a neighbor or co-worker used, were they satisfied with the work, the cost, the interaction, and the schedule?
How did the contractor respond to the change orders that invariably cropped up? How were problems handled by the contractor?
State & Local Licensing Authorities
I recommend that you always check-out local/state licensing authorities to see if the contractor has a current license and bond on file - and to see if there are any actions initiated against the contractor.
Other Rating Agencies
Some home renovation contractors may part of the Better Business Bureau (a paid membership), so you can see what the BBB indicates the contractor's status is, any complaints, etc.
